SA Mountain Magazine is South Africa's only dedicated climbing and mountaineering magazine and has been around for nearly three years. It is a quarterly publication which comes out in March, June, September and December.

We endeavour to publish articles relating to climbing, mountaineering and trekking in South Africa and around the world. We also feature up-to-date news coverage, training articles, gear reviews, interviews with great climbing personalities, technical tips covering a wide variety of subjects.
Our contributors come from a broad base of multiple mountaineering disciplines, including some of the counrty's top climbers and mountaineers, as well as some from abroad. This is to ensure that we can bring to you, our reader, the very best that we can offer and we hope that you won't be disappointed.

The Editor
Tony Lourens

Tony has been involved in mountaineering for over 30 years and has climbed extensively in many countries around the world. His greatest passion is to explore new places and climb in as many different areas as possible.

He has been involved in publishing for about six years and has written and published a number of climbing and walking/scrambling guides for areas in the Western Cape of South Africa. He also has a regular column (Mountain Talk) in the "Cape Times" (Cape Town's daily morning newspaper), for which he has been writing since 1998.

Assistant Editor
Andrew Fulton

Andrew first got into climbing in Canada more than 15 years ago. In 1996 he came to South Africa and has stayed ever since. He has climbed all over the world but still reckons that Table Mountain is one of his most favourite spots. He enjoys long country routes and also long hikes in places like the Cederberg mountains.

Since coming to SA he has had various jobs, working as Parliamentary Affairs Manager for an NGO, Exporting Flowers, and Developing Web-based trading portals. He currently runs an IT Management Consultancy company called Eighty20.

Andrew has extensive experience editing and writing for numerous newspapers and magazines including Business Day, Financial Mail, Finance Week and the Globe and Mail.

Gear Editor
Mark Johnston

If it's made from Gore-Tex, Vibram, Pertex or Stealth C4 rubber, chances are it's been put through its paces by SA Mountain gear editor Mark Johnston.

"I'm fascinated by outdoor gear," says Mark. "I want to know what is the lightest, strongest most reliable equipment out there." And he's pretty dedicated in his quest. Last year he spent two days in a walk-in freezer testing sleeping bags, braved atrocious conditions on Scotland's Cullin Ridge trying out a new soft-shell and even subjected himself to a morning under a high pressure shower to find the most waterproof raincoat.

When he's not trying to destroy gear you'll find him on the mountain enjoying his two other favourite pastimes, climbing and photography.

Web Master and News Editor
Kirsten Meyer

A recent addition to the world of traditional rock climbing, Kirsten has been an avid sport climber for almost ten years and still considers herself more of a 'confused sport climber' than anything else.

She's been climbing at some of the most acclaimed sport climbing area's in the world including several area's in Canada as well as an extended stay on the well known TonSai Beach in Krabi, Thailand.

New to the world of web page maintenance, Kirsten has spent most of her working life in the outdoor retail and services industries.

Her goals in life are to make sure that her work is challenging and rewarding and most importantly, that it gives her ample time and opportunity to get out onto the rock!
