Montague Rock Rally Results
The 2008 Montague Rock Rally has come and gone, leaving the routes well chalked and the trails well trampled.
The participant numbers were a little down on last year, but the perfect weather, good spirit and fantastic prizes made it a day that few of the climbers will forget.
There was some impressive sending going down through the day. Matt Bush sent his two new test pieces again, "Impi" 34 and "Duende" 32, to give him and Christo van Zyl, who only just missed getting "Aqua-Man" 31 by managing to fall off the finishing holds, the title of new Rock Rally champions. Jimbo Smith made easy work of "Whoa She Poopie" 30 and partner Ross Mc Bride sent "Cool Like That" 29 to give them a well deserved second place. Karen Varga and Gosia Lipinska got some good milage in and gave the guys a run for their money with a score that put them first in the senior ladies and third over all, well done girls. Johann Papendorf and Phlip Olivier had a very busy day and raised the bar for most routes in a day from 33 to 41! Phlip climbed 22 routes. They had the ClimbZA team of Justin and Riki Lawson close on their heels, who managed to equal the 33 route record. Riki raised her own personal climbing bar by leading more routes on the day than she has lead in her whole entire climbing career put together, good job!!! keep it up gal! Ed February put in a good days climbing by anybodies standards and managed to keep his score well within the 2 - 3000 points range along with all the other seniors, bar the winning team, well done Ed, the only veteran on the day. Julia Wakeling and Melinda Griffiths were fantastic in their dress up and looked great as a pair of fairy type ballerinas in climbing kit, well done girls! They also had the honor of getting the first choice of prize at the prize giving.
A very big thank you to all you climbers who made the effort to make it out here and to be part of the Montagu Rock Rally, you made the event for me, thank you. An even bigger thank you to Andy Davies for using up all his brownie points and managing to be away from his baby girl for the day.
