A Rondebosch physiotherapist is the latest mugging victim on Table
Mountain after being robbed at gunpoint.
Alewyn Vorster, 57, told the Cape Argus on Wednesday that he had been
riding his mountain bike from Rhodes Memorial to town on Wednesday when
an armed man jumped out and demanded his bicycle and backpack.
He said the mugging happened at about 1 pm in "a pretty quiet area".
"He pressed the gun against my head and was screaming at me to hand over
the bike and then demanded the backpack," said Vorster.
Voster said he had thought the muggers would lie low for some time
following the publicity about the recent muggings and promises of
improved security.
But he admitted to having made the mistake of riding alone on the mountain.
Vorster described the mugger as a man in his early 30s, weighing about
85 to 90kg.
His mugging came a day after Community Safety MEC Leonard Ramatlakane
rejected calls for the army to patrol the mountain, saying there was "no
need" for the presence of the army at the popular tourist site.
