Bolt Failure at Kleinmond Crag.- Andy Davies
We have unfortunately had another bolt failure.
This one was the 5th bolt on Zucchini at Kleinmond
and the unfortunate soul took a thorough screamer
onto the 4th bolt which luckily held. The bolt
was stainless steel and the failure surface was
badly corroded like the other 2 failures we have
had.
In addition I had the "pleasure" of removing
the bolts on the top half of 'Red Guitar on Fire'
at 'The Mine' a while back and was surprised at
how easily the bolt sheared on the 2nd, "thin"
crux. On closer inspection the failure surface
was visibly rotten as a result of corrosion.
So as we suspected, we have a problem out there
with bolts potentially breaking. The good news
for you is that many of the bolts that we have
pulled have put up a great fight. Of course this
is bad news for the poor b@stard ARF volunteers,
as pulling bolts is like trying to extract a tooth
from an elephant and takes twice as long as installing
the new bolt. So while ARF keeps chipping away
at this problem please take care and take additional
precautions like wearing a helmet. ARF plans on
having some more visible work days so please feel
free to participate - we will keep you posted.
In addition if you haven't made your R200 donation
please do so now before you forget.
Happy and safe cranking.
