Two South Africans, three Australians and two Dutch tourists have been
robbed by three knife-wielding men in Skeleton Gorge on Table Mountain.

Table Mountain National Park spokesperson Phumeza Mgxashe said the
hikers had been robbed of their valuables at about 1pm on Wednesday. The
valuables included the tourists' cellphones, cameras and passports.

Mgxashe said she did not think the muggers had taken advantage of the
strike by Health and Other Services Personnel Trade Union of SA
(Hospersa) at some national parks as all the safety personnel were on
duty on Wednesday.

She said the tourists had laid a charge with the Claremont police, but
no arrests had been made

Earlier this year a spate of robberies on Table Mountain led to a public
meeting at Newlands where it was decided to set up a volunteer-run
visitor safety unit to help fight crime on the mountain.

Fourteen people were mugged near Kirstenbosch, three tourists and a
guide were robbed on the top of the mountain, near Maclear's Beacon, and
other attacks were reported on Signal Hill and near the King's
Blockhouse on Devil's Peak above Rhodes Memorial in February and March.
